yellowribbonAs we all know, that the former first woman president of the Philippines died a week ago was laid to rest yesterday, Aug 05, 2009 (Manila local time) after 16 months of her battle against Colon cancer. She was 76 years old.  It was kinda weird, I was trying to avoid the idea of paying a tribute to her because I know for a fact that most, if not all Filipino bloggers all over the world are doing the same but I can’t ignore the fact that she did really change the world, especially the life of  the Filipino people.

Media calls her Madam President Corazon Aquino, but for a common citizen of the Philippines, we simply call her “Tita Cory”.Maybe she prefer it that way because it makes the common people really close to her.I don’t  know  very much about her, I was only in elementary when she took the oath as the 11th President of the Phils. after the People Power  ousted the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos, and that time, I have no single idea what’s really going on.  I wasn’t even aware that she’s making a history to the world because if I’m not mistaken, she’s not only the first woman president of the Phils but  also first in Asia. Today, I want to share 13 things that I learned about her thru the years, it’s either info I heard over the news, or things I learned from school, or just my common knowledge about her.

  1. She was born January 25, 1933.
  2. She was unknown political figure until that election of 1986.
  3. She was the 11th president of the Philippines.
  4. Her husband, Benigno Aquino Sr. was jailed by Marcos government and send to exile in US in 1980 and was assasinated in 1983 upon his return to the Phils.
  5. She and her family  believed that the Marcoses was behind the killing which by the way, until now the case is still open and the killer is still unknown.
  6. She is half-chinese, half-filipino.
  7. Her symbol of color is Yellow, while the Marcos was Red.
  8. She was a Stay-at-home mom and a very supportive housewife before she got involved in politics, that she latter say only because of her husband.
  9. Because of the People Power, the next four years of my high school life, we have to do a Walk For Peace along EDSA, (the place where the Revolution was happen) during it’s anniversary celebration which is February 25.
  10. She was called Icon Of Democracy because of what she did to the Philippines.
  11. During her leadership, she was featured in TIME Magazine.
  12. She belong to a well-to-do family in Tarlac,Northern part of the Phils.
  13. She died of Colon cancer.

One of her famous quote:

“Politics must not remain a bastion of male dominance, for there is much that women can bring into politics that would make our world a kinder, gentler place for humanity to thrive in.”

May her kind soul Rest In Peace.

My husband and I admired President Aquino very much. When the Marcos’ were finally kicked out, the Philippines were in a great deal of trouble and the government institutions were so corrupt. It was amazing to watch a woman with no political experience unite the people behind her and clean things up the way that she did. Her popularity made it possible for her to have become a “permanent” type of president (like the one they have in Egypt now), but she did her job and then passed the torch on to someone else. President Aquino was an amazing woman, and I think the whole world will miss her.

A good friend in high school came from the Philippines with her family in the early 80′s. They figured that they would spend the rest of their lives in the US because they couldn’t bear the thought of going back. Because of President Aquino they returned just after we graduated from high school, nothing like being able to go home.
